Unlock The Power Of Pro-Ceramide | Our Ingredients | Lubriderm®
Explore the science behind Pro-Ceramide and how it revitalizes your skin's natural moisture barrier.
How Can Pro-Ceramide Help The Skin?
A Pro-Ceramide is an ingredient that supports skin’s natural ceramide levels. In other words, Pro-Ceramide is a building block that allows your skin to replenish its own ceramides.
Ceramides For Skin: The Essential Moisturizer
You can thank ceramides for allowing your skin to naturally retain moisture.
Ceramides are lipids, or natural fatty acids, that exist in the skin and serve a vital function when it comes to locking in moisture and keeping skin hydrated. That soft, healthy-looking skin we recognize on a newborn baby is flush with essential ceramides—which are natural skin protectants.
Technically speaking, ceramides are the predominant lipids in the stratum corneum, or the skin’s outermost layer. While the skin is made of individual cells, ceramides are like a mortar between the cells, sealing the space to lock in moisture. If the tiles on your bathroom wall represented skin cells, the grout between the tiles would represent ceramides.
Your skin naturally produces ceramides. In fact, hundreds of ceramide molecules are present in skin’s moisture barrier, making up nearly 50 percent of skin’s total lipids. Since essential ceramides lock in moisture, preventing irritated, dry skin, the total level of ceramides in the skin is imperative for a healthy moisture barrier.
How Can A Decrease In Ceramides Affect Skin?
Natural ceramide levels decrease with age. It has been shown that by the time you are in your mid-20’s or early 30’s, ceramide levels have reduced by about 20%. By your mid-40’s to 60’s, they’ve been shown to reduce by a whopping 40%. As they decrease, dry skin occurs due to a reduced or imbalanced number of ceramides. Seasonal changes, like the onset of fall and winter, can also cause a reduction in the number of ceramides produced.
When ceramide levels decrease, our skin becomes vulnerable to a loss of moisture and resulting conditions. Lower ceramide levels and an imbalanced composition are associated with:
Skin issues like Atopic Dermatitis
Aging, including the presentation of fine lines and wrinkles
Piel seca
Skin irritation
